The larynx is the structure that contains the vocal cords. It
is critical to our ability to speak and is important in protecting
our lungs from inhaling
foreign materials and preventing aspiration. Disorders and diseases
of the larynx and throat can lead to significant impairment
of our lives and livelihoods.
From
Laryngitis to Throat Cancer Treatment
People who use their voices a great deal, such as teachers,
singers, public speakers and members of the clergy, are prone
to developing voice problems and may sometimes develop nodules
or polyps on their vocal cords . Disturbances of the larynx
may be as simple as laryngitis (simple inflammation) or as serious
as cancer. Through a combination of medical, surgical and behavioral
interventions, the staff of Midwest ENT Centre is uniquely qualified
to diagnose and treat disorders of the larynx and throat. State-of-the-Art
Diagnostic Tools Evaluation of hoarseness and other voice disorders
at Midwest ENT Centre begins with looking at the larynx using
mirrors or a flexible fiber optic laryngoscope. Often these
methods are sufficient, but occasionally more information is
needed for accurate diagnosis. In such circumstances, video
laryngoscopy allows the physician to obtain highly detailed
information about vocal cord structure and function. When indicated,
these tests are done in our office with no sedation and little,
if any, local anesthetic.
