An accomplished medical researcher and author, Dr. MacDonald is another third-generation physician. His great-grandfather made house calls in Boston and Chicago, and his father practiced in St. Louis for 31 years. His immediate family includes two registered nurses - his mother and sister.

A native of St. Louis, Dr. MacDonald graduated second in his class from St. Louis Priory School and received his bachelor's degree in chemistry (magna cum laude) from Duke University. He was elected into Phi Beta Kappa in 1989. Before earning his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, he received a research grant from the March of Dimes to investigate congenital visual defects. His research findings were subsequently published in a scientific journal.
