The
Need for a Physician Specialist
People can have allergic reactions to many kinds of triggers,
including pollen, house dust, pet dander, foods, mold spores,
and much more; and it takes an allergy specialist to determine
the cause and most beneficial treatment program for each individual
patient. Only an ENT physician can conduct the necessary examination
of your head and neck area to determine if infection or structural
abnormalities (such as a nasal septal deviation or polyps) are
aggravating factors in allergy patients.
While the management of allergy
includes counseling in proper environmental control, a number
of medications‹including antihistamines, decongestants
and cortisone-type preparations‹are effective. For severe sufferers, the effects
of allergies may
be mitigated by the administration of injections (immunotherapy)
that, over time, prompt the patient to build up protective antibodies
to specific allergens (pollens, molds, dust, etc.). Your physician
will oversee your progress during the course of treatment and
direct care for other nasal and sinus disorders that may contribute
to your symptoms.
